AmaWaterways has unveiled its 11-night “Secrets of Egypt & the Nile” cruise and land itinerary, which includes three nights in Cairo pre-cruise and one-night in Cairo post-cruise, where guests may stay at The St. Regis or The Nile Ritz-Carlton.
The itinerary kicks off with three nights in Cairo where guests, led by Egyptologists, visit the Egyptian Museum, home to 120,000 artifacts, including King Tutankhamen’s treasures; the Alabaster Mosque with views stretching to the Pyramids of Giza; and the UNESCO-designated capital of ancient Memphis, home to the Step Pyramid of King Zoser, the Great Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids.
Guests will then step aboard one of AmaWaterways’ luxury ships—the 72-guest AmaDahlia or the 82-guest AmaLilia—for a seven-night Nile cruise. Highlights include a private tour of the Tomb of Queen Nefertari; tours of the tombs in the Valley of the Kings; and the Temple of Hatshepsut, one of Egypt’s most successful pharaohs and the country’s first female ruler; an up-close view of the Colossi of Memnon and its two gigantic statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III; and the Temple of Horus in Edfu. Guests can also enjoy a scenic felucca (traditional wooden sailing boat) ride around Elephantine Island; a visit to Abu Simbel, known for its two massive rock-cut temples and the four colossal statues of Ramses II on the outside; and a visit to the Great Temple of Kom Ombo, dedicated to the crocodile deity Sobek and falcon deity Haroeri.
With plenty of free time for independent exploration, guests can also wander among the markets and take in the sights and sounds of this ancient land. Cultural experiences include a galabeya (traditional long robe) evening, a belly dance performance onboard and informal cooking classes.
The itinerary concludes in Cairo with guests enjoying a private tour of Abdeen Palace, followed by lunch at the palace and a visit to Coptic Cairo, exploring historic sites such as the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue.
