A new luxury boutique country accommodation has been launched on the site of an iconic former backpacker's haunt in New Zealand’s North Island. Offered by New Zealand travel expert, New Zealand In Depth, the new Gardener’s Folly is in an isolated plot in the Ruapehu District. The newly renovated 970-square-foot private detached cottage, with 540-square-foot covered deck, has opened to guests this month offering a spacious country two-bed accommodation with expansive views across the green-pastured hills and valleys.
Set within a copse of maple trees, The Gardener’s Folly is surrounded by acres of Forgotten World farmland. It is being offered on an exclusive basis only, meaning guests will have sole use of all the facilities and can even include a private chef dining experience to elevate the stay further. The property comes with its own fully equipped designer kitchen complete with Carrara marble benches and a custom-made recycled milk carton floor—tying the building into the ground's history as a sheep and beef farm.
The two en-suite bedrooms come with bespoke décor and design, queen-sized beds and antique furniture and art.

Paul Carberry, founder of New Zealand in Depth, says, “Guests can also shower under glass-roofed sunshine with a walk-in double shower with twin rain-heads, bespoke toiletries and sculpture finished with a pressed-tin ceiling.” He adds: “The whole experience connects you to the local surroundings.”
Good to know: The region is well-suited for relaxation or as a starting point for the Tongariro Crossing, a hike featuring lava flows, an active crater, steam vents, emerald lakes, and stunning views.
